With the new twitter layout, the big twitter backgrounds have now disappeared and they have a new twitter header that goes behind your twitter profile picture.
When you design the twitter header behind your picture it needs to be a specific size or your image will get stretched or pixelated. The same goes for your twitter profile pic.
The correct Twitter Header Dimensions are:
1500 x 500 pixels - maximum file size of 5MB
The correct Twitter Picture Size is:
400 × 400 pixels minimum, 2MB maximum - Keep in a perfect square dimensions (all four sides the same pixel length)
The larger the profile pic is (600x600 or 800x800, etc.) the better it will look on your profile for people viewing in all different size screen resolutions.
Your profile photo will scale down to 200×200 on your regular profile page, but it will grow to full size when somebody clicks on it. It will also be much smaller in the icon next to your tweets so its good to make sure you check your image in each of these three states to make sure it looks ok.
