Facebook was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and his college roommates Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes while they were computer science major students at Harvard University. The website got it's name from the name of a book given to incoming students at Zuckerberg's high school, Phillips Exeter Academy, that displayed the faces and names of the school's students and faculty.

Facebook was originally called Thefacebook.com and it's membership was limited to Harvard students. Then membership was later expanded to other colleges, then colleges and highschools and finally to anyone over age 13. Facebook currently has over 250 million active users worldwide.

In January 2009, Facebook was ranked the most used social network by worldwide monthly active users.
